We’re not quite certain if it was the influence of designers or the cumulative effect of Ranveer Singh and Jim Sarbh, but men, over the past ten years have become fashion-conscious, and how! According to a report by Euromonitor International, a decade earlier, menswear was not an attractive space because men shopped out of necessity and not to stay upbeat with trends. The pattern, however, has changed, and is working well in favour of brands, designers, and women, alike.
“The Indian menswear market is influenced by what happens in the west. Today, men are travelling a lot more than before, which is the primary reason for shift in their behaviour,” says one of India’s leading designers, Rajesh Pratap Singh.
A khadi and an environment—an alternative word he prefers to use over sustainability since he thinks it’s been done to death—lover, Singh’s work spells modernism, innovation, and class. “Even office wear for men has become relaxed and easy as compared to the propriety that existed a few years back,” he says.
Some of the factors and modifications that aided this welcome change are mentioned below:
CASUALISATION OF WORKWEAR
Some claim that the late Steve Jobs’ signature black turtleneck with a pair of jeans and sneakers influenced companies to go easy on the dress codes in their organisations.
A few thank actors in the movies, and influencers, for making the fashion maxim ‘desk-to-drinks’ possible for them. Reasons can be many, but all agree that it was a much-needed shift.
