Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won hearts with her podium finish, bringing home the country’s first medal at the recent Tokyo Olympics. She talks about her journey to the top, preparing for upcoming games, and inspiring a nation

She kick-started India’s most successful Olympic campaign ever by winning the silver medal in the women’s 49kg weightlifting category this year. Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, the first Indian weightlifter to win silver at the Olympics, and only the second Indian weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari to win an Olympic medal, made it to the podium lifting 202 kilos at the recently-concluded Tokyo Olympics. That was not all: the Manipuri weightlifter also managed to set an Olympic record with a successful lift of 115 kilos in clean and jerk category.
