Winter is a key time for Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust to maintain and improve its woodlands. Reserves officer Andy Brown describes what goes into keeping them in peak condition
WHY WINTER?
Much of the work on our reserves has to be carried out during winter when wildlife is generally less active. You might notice parks and woodland becoming increasingly wild in the summer months, with paths becoming less defined and some plants seemingly out of control. Birds nest throughout these months, while butterflies, such as the rare white admiral, can be seen along woodland rides. For these reasons we only do what is absolutely necessary over the summer, with all other management taking place during the winter months.
