Among the Tamil films that hit the screens in August — the month in which celebrations were abound over the founding of Madras - l 'aramani' was one that set tongues wagging. Apart from being unique and not another run of the mill Kollywood venture in terms of cinematic formulae, plot and narration, Taramani touched the subject `sex in the city' and presented it in a realistic way.

From among those who assumed that the movie dealt with the subject of feminism, there was a cacophony of hoarse catcalls. It portrayed feminism wrongly and in a superfluous fashion, they charged. But what no one can point fingers is at the way the movie holds the mirror to the changed sexual mores, not just among the women inhabiting the urban landscape beyond Taramani, an old village that has now turned into the gateway for a new liberated world, but elsewhere, too.
