NEW SUPERHERO DRAMA

Hawkeye

From Wednesday 24 Nov, Disney+

One of Marvel’s most popular heroes gets his own TV series this week when Jeremy Renner reprises his big-screen role as expert archer Hawkeye.

From humble beginnings with a cameo in the first Thor movie in 2011, Clint Barton – alias Hawkeye – went on to become an Avenger and a linchpin of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

But Hawkeye hasn’t always been one of the good guys – particularly in the movie Avengers: Endgame, when Clint took on the identity of vengeance-seeking vigilante Ronin after villainous Thanos wiped out his family.

That chequered history is explored further in the new six-part miniseries on Disney+. The first two episodes are available from Wednesday, before new episodes are released weekly.

It begins as Clint is trying to get home to his family in time for Christmas. However, a threat from his past forces him to team up with Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) – his biggest fan, and a skilled archer herself – while he comes to terms with his actions as Ronin.

Here, Renner, 50, and Steinfeld, 24, reveal what’s in store in Disney+’s latest Marvel spin-off...

What has Hawkeye’s journey been like so far?

Renner Thor was just a quick little cameo, and then in the first Avengers film, he was Loki’s sidekick, so I was still trying to figure this guy out. But in Age of Ultron, they cemented the family life – I think that was a huge thing for the original six Avengers. Having that secret family, and grounding it in his values was a great leap for the character.
