The Hallyu Wave’s Still Riding Strong And There’s No Denying That Fourth-gen Girl Group Twice Is Cruising Right At The Top. Despite Their Meteoric Rise To Success, Their Journey Was Quite The Bumpy Ride. Ahead, We Chart The Highs And Not-so Lows Of K-pop’s Reigning Sweethearts.
It seems like it was just yesterday that we had iconic girl groups like wonder girls, 2ne1 and 4minute running the world. fast-forward to 2017 and there’s a new bevy of young pop mavens gracing the stage, but how many of these budding divas are capable of filling the stilettos of these second-gen legacies? Just ask TWICE. Arguably the brightest ladies in K-pop right now, the nine some has been dominating the scene with their colourful brand of funky pop anthems, girl-next-door charms and top-notch visuals – all while infecting everyone under the sun with the twice virus (sha sha sha and neomuhae, anybody?).
While it did seem like twice was set on the fast track to stardom – after all, the JYp darlings were expected to follow in the footsteps of their ‘tell Me’ sunbaes – their road to success was far from smooth-sailing. Being thrust into the cutthroat entertainment industry at such a young age, their every move came under the scrutiny of the public eye, on top of struggling with naysayers and the constant pressure to out-do the competition. Yet it’s precisely because of these ups and downs that shaped twice into who they are today.
Sit tight, we’re heading on a trip down TWICE coaster lane.
Before twice even happened, JYp was in the midst of preparing for its new six-member girl group, 6MiX. rumour had it that Jihyo, Nayeon, Jungyeon and sana were originally part of the lineup, but plans were scraped due to two of the candidates dropping out. we can’t imagine twice without ‘em, but it’ll be interesting to see the chemistry between 6MiX and twice.
