Whereas Gary would use masses of distortion for live shows, on the original recording, the inherent sustain of the guitar (a modified Les Paul) and sheer amp volume are key. Wherever you&rsquo;re playing, look for a sweet spot in the room where the feedback from your amp really sings &ndash; and stand there when it&rsquo;s time for the sustain!Gary&rsquo;s phrasing provides its own set of challenges, from wide string bends to a mixture of gradually-introduced and aggressive vibrato.String bends in particular are key to Gary&rsquo;s beautifully-crafted melody lines and will need plenty of practice.CHORDSThese are mainly open-position chords, but you may get caught out by one or two tricky shapes. Dm7/G is best viewed as a simple change to the Dm7 chord; you&rsquo;ll need to play Dm7 with your first and second fingers to set yourself up for Dm7/G. Bm7b5 has an unusual name, but, if you know the open Dm chord, it&rsquo;s easy to think of it as a Dm chord played over a low B bass note.SCALESThe A natural minor scale shapes (A B C D E F G) will give you a good idea of how to play the intro and first verse. The intro and first solo both land on a G# note&nbsp;on the E chord &ndash; a great example of the A harmonic minor scale (A B C D E F G#). The first solo ends on a lick that&rsquo;s essentially the blues scale, but with an added B note.
