Instead, a combination of reverb and Boss CE-1 chorus gave Alex&rsquo;s tone huge width, sounding like two guitars playing at once. Lifeson used the Marshall 2x12 Club &amp; Country combo, Marshall&rsquo;s answer to the Fender Twin, &ldquo;almost exclusively&rdquo; on Moving Pictures.The guitar was a Gibson semi, probably his white ES-355. Lifeson delivered a handful of improvised takes (&ldquo;I like to surprise myself,&rdquo; he told MusicRadar), mainly in E Mixolydian, flavoured with occasional pinched harmonics and the odd &lsquo;outside&rsquo; note which Lifeson said complemented the song&rsquo;s rebellious lyrics.Tom Sawyer became the band&rsquo;s signature song. As Foo Fighters drummer and Rush fanatic Taylor Hawkins said: &ldquo;It&rsquo;s their Hotel California. Their Bohemian Rhapsody.&rdquo;
