<div style="page-break-before:always; page-break-after:always">We&rsquo;ve never had it so good with gear, to the point where world-class modelling now lives inside the most budget of practice tools. But nothing gets a guitarist&rsquo;s motor running like the sound of valves being pushed into overdrive. With three pedals in its Dept. 10 line-up (Boost, Dual Drive and Dual Distortion), Blackstar&rsquo;s new range gives us true high-voltage (200V to be precise) operation from an ECC83 preamp valve, and in the case of the Dual pedals, some exciting digital features to boot.<div style="page-break-before:always; page-break-after:always">Starting with the Boost, you have a fairly straightforward control set of boost, plus low and high knobs. But that EQ circuit is of the James Baxandall variety, offering a wide, smooth Q and a bump to the front end of your amp that Blackstar says is like adding two extra valve stages. Next up is the Dual Drive and Distortion, again featuring an ECC83 each running at amp-level voltages. Both Dual pedals give you two channels with Clean and Crunch voicings on channel one, and two flavours of gain on their second channels. There&rsquo;s also three-band EQ plus Blackstar&rsquo;s ISF control.<div style="page-break-before:always; page-break-after:always">But the big news here lies in the Dual pedals&rsquo; digital processing. Blackstar has developed its new Cab Rig emulation for the Dept. 10 Dual pedals, which not only gives you an emulated DSP cab simulator, complete with its own dedicated output for going direct to a PA or FRFR speaker, but allows for deep-dive editing of your virtual cab thanks to the free Architect software.Also on board is a USB audio interface for direct recording to a computer, as well as an FX loop for integrating your other pedals.
