Det Supt Fulcher interviewed Halliwell without cautioning him, in the hope he&rsquo;d talk and Sian could be found alive. Halliwell confessed to killing both Sian and another young woman, Becky Godden- Edwards, who disappeared in 2003.Difficult choicesNow a real-life ITV drama, starring Martin Freeman as Steve Fulcher and Joe Absolom as Halliwell, explores the case.&lsquo;It&rsquo;s a story of two murdered girls and their families and then it broadens out to being a story of this detective who tries his best for them,&rsquo; saysMartin. &lsquo;If Halliwell was cautioned and brought back to the police station, his brief would tell him to say, &ldquo;No comment.&rdquo; But Steve wants him to talk.&rsquo;JudgmentThe drama, which also follows the traumatic events through the eyes of Becky&rsquo;s mother Karen (Imelda Staunton) and Sian&rsquo;s mother Elaine (Siobhan Finneran), looks at how Steve&rsquo;s breach of police regulations put the case in jeopardy.Although Halliwell was eventually convicted and jailed for both murders, Steve was found guilty of gross misconduct at a disciplinary tribunal in 2014 and later resigned. &lsquo;His life unravels,&rsquo; says Martin. &lsquo;His work was a massive part of his identity. One day changed all that.&rsquo; Conversations with the real Steve Fulcher proved invaluable. &lsquo;As far as Steve is concerned, every decision he took was justifiable,&rsquo;says Martin. &lsquo;He paid a high price.&rsquo;
