“If I wasn’t a designer, I’d probably be making cheese in Switzerland,” Kevin Germanier writes over email, including in parentheses that he says this with a laugh. That might — or might not, we’re not connoisseurs of dairy — be a pity for Switzerland’s cheese industry, but fashion’s not complaining that this Swiss-born and Paris-based designer picked clothing. Because apart from the obvious gasp-inducing, Studio 54-esque appeal of Germanier’s creations, there’s another reason why his eponymous label deserves attention. It upcycles, making use of discarded fabrics and embellishments, but the result is clearly nothing like the sustainable stereotype of simple, pared-back garments. Case in point: unwanted beads picked up on a trip to Hong Kong were given new life on an embroidered dress, one Björk deemed worthy for the promotional picture of her album, Utopia, in 2017. (She also wore another Germanier dress on stage in 2018).
