Since Silvia Venturini Fendi started to fly solo as a womenswear designer for the Italian house due to Karl Lagerfeld’s passing, there’s been an air of change about the Fendi woman. While in many ways she’s still the power femme that the two designers fleshed out and gave life to over the years, she’s been starting to feel a lot more candid recently. To contextualise it in today’s era of filtered selfies, she’s basically posting hers without putting them through any beauty filtering app.
This season, she’s celebrated not for her superwoman capabilities or her perfectly put-together veneer, but for her polarity. A polarity that embraces the following extremes: assertive yet indulgent; provocative yet reserved; and goal-oriented with a colourful personal life to speak of. Venturini Fendi floated the word “liberation” during her post-show interviews, but given that cabin fever is as real as it gets now that we’re down to the tail end of 2020, what does that word mean today? Perhaps it’s about being unabashedly human.
