Of all the relationship advice I have ever received, there is one line that still makes me seethe: “You should date a nice guy.” Listen, I’ve dated some jerks – men who ghosted me, men whose narcissism made me wonder whether they’d ever considered my inner world at all. But ‘nice’ is one of those baseline qualities that should be a given. Like, of course I should date a nice guy, just like I should date a guy who breathes air, smiles sometimes and doesn’t have an extensive criminal record.
