A Cut Above

After making waves internationally, Amit Masurkar’s dark comedy Newton releases in India this month

Back in 2013, Amit Masurkar faced what every writer dreads: A blank screen. In the hope of finding inspiration, he typed random words, constitution being one of them, which led him to the preamble. It was the first time he read it in its entirety, and a thought emerged, on how everybody has the right to vote. So began the journey of his latest film, Newton, which premiered at international platforms like the Tribeca Film Festival and won the Art Cinema Award at Berlin Film Festival. A dark comedy about a clerk on election duty, set in Chhatisgarh, it is out in theatres in India this month.
