We are obsessed with Kim Kardashians tiny waist, JLos butt and Teyana Taylors fit form. Are these fixations making us lose our selfesteem? ANDANJE WOBANDA discusses the steps you need to take to love your body and in essence, boost your self-confidence.
Women have to deal constantly with their perceived failure to meet the beauty standards set by society. Images and conversations about the perfect woman bombard us from all directions and when we compare ourselves with the qualities depicted, we imagine, ‘my eyes are not the right shape, my skin tone is not the right shade and my figure could use some drastic improvements.’ Our society has made us hate the bodies we are in so much, that we are constantly on one form of a diet or another just so that we can fit in. If you are dissatisfied with who you are all the time, when will you ever be happy?
SO WHAT SHOULD ONE DO?
Find out why you are dissatisfied Why do you want to be thinner? Lighter skinned? Why are people around you preoccupied with appearance? You must first find out the root of your dissatisfaction. When you do, you will discover that we are often made to believe, that our worth is derived from the way we look. If you look more closely, you have to accept another truth. All these messages about the ideal looks, are rooted in profits. Companies that make diet pills need to make a dime as do clothing stores and cosmetic businesses. To sell their products, they first have to succeed in making you feel dissatisfied - with who you are.
ACCEPT THAT HAPPINESS IS NOT A BODY SHAPE
It has been drilled into us that if you are a certain size or shape, then you will DEFINITELY get the man you want, the job you desire. You will live the life of a winner. You therefore, tell yourself that if you just drop a few kilogrammes you will be happy. But if this was true, the ‘perfect’ people, who fit the prescribed bill, would all be happy, but they are not. Chasing body perfection only brings pain as it communicates to your brain that you are not what you should be. So, no, the reason he did not call back is not because you have thunder thighs, it is more about him being a jerk.
