Ever had a gut feeling, a hunch, or felt your sixth sense tingling? Thats intuition, and it helps you make better decisions. ANDANJE WOBANDA explains why you should be tapping into yours.
Intuition is that gentle persuasion or nagging feeling at the back of your mind that tells you something bad or good is about to happen if you take a specific path. It is the ‘knowing’ that something is off without concrete evidence. For better decision making, you need to be in tune with your intuition.
A lot of people assume that intuition is a miraculous thing, but experts in the fields of science and psychology say it’s the ability of your brain to tap into stored memory in order to make decisions too quick for the conscious mind to decipher.
Every sensory information you have ever experienced (smell, touch, sight, sound, and taste) is stored in the subconscious. On a normal day, your mind determines what you should focus on and the rest is pushed to the back of your unconscious. This is because if you were allowed to experience and remember everything that has happened to you since you were six years old, you would be quite overwhelmed!
When you set goals or are faced with a decision (whether it is starting a new business or choosing a new school for your child), your brain goes back to your stored memory and filters everything that is associated or aligned with this goal and presents it to you as a hunch. That is how the intuitive process works. In other words, intuition relies heavily on past experiences to predict an outcome. This allows you to make a decision so quickly that you don’t register the decision at a conscious level.
So how do you tap into this unlimited source of information?
