Yuvraj Singh remains an inspiring figure even as he starts a new innings away from cricket.
Greek and Latin mythology are full of timeless references that can be appropriated to contemporary times. While our political figures give us ample opportunities to ascribe various motifs and scenarios from Greek tragedies, our sporting heroes have one Latin mythology that fits only the best of them; pueraeternus, the eternal boy. In tennis we have Leander Paes who continues to be a world beater despite being on the wrong side of 40, and in cricket, we have Yuvraj Singh, who continues to battle on, defying age and his body, which was completely broken by cancer after he won Man of the Tournament when India lifted the World Cup in 2011.
“After I returned to India from my treatment (in Boston, USA), my body was zero. I was like a child who had to learn everything all over again. My lung capacity was reduced to 50 per cent, and it took me about three months of training twice a day at the NCA (National Cricket Academy, Bengaluru) to get moving towards where I wanted to be (in terms of fitness),” said Yuvraj Singh, a day before he took the field as captain of the India Red team in this year’s Duleep Trophy.
