What is one of Hollywood’s favourite designers doing in a Mumbai slum? Marchesa’s GEORGINA CHAPMAN has been quietly playing mentor and improving the lives of children through the Magic Bus NGO, finds ROSHNI BAJAJ SANGHVI.
Designer and co-founder of 13-year-old design label Marchesa, Georgina Chapman’s latest trip to India was an alliterative journey between Mumbai, Magic Bus and Mankhurd. The designer’s stunning gowns are red carpet favourites, preferred by Hollywood royalty from Cameron Diaz to Kristen Stewart. But this time around, Chapman wasn’t here to source embroideries for Marchesa. Her itinerary was more personal, beginning with a visit to an illegal slum. In Mankhurd, a suburb of Mumbai, Marchesa supports 2,400 children through the 17-year-old nonprofit organisation Magic Bus, which implements programmes to promote education, gender equality and good health practices among children living in a poverty-stricken community. Magic Bus sessions make these children want to go to school and, through a system of mentorship, lead children, as founder Matthew Spacie says, “from childhood to livelihood.”
