After IMFL, the alcobev industry is planning to package country liquor in cardboard cartons. United Spirits was the first to introduce liquor in tetra Packs in the market five years ago. Glass bottles had become expensive and it was very difficult to source them. The last glass factory in Kerala, owned by Excel Glasses Ltd, was shut down in 2012 after the company reported losses due to increasing costs of electricity and raw materials.
Tetra pack cartons offers a complete range of packaging solution which is lightweight, environmental-friendly and convenient for consumers to open and handle. It has optimal shelf life and high brand visibility. This packaging is known for its low environment impact. During recycling, the paperboard (which consists of 75% of the carton) gets separated from the other two materials (polyethylene and aluminum). The cartons are easy to transport and protect the material from heat and moisture. The packaged portfolio includes aseptic packages, chilled and food packages. The aseptic technology keeps the product fresh and healthy without the need of preservatives.
A tetra pack container costs half the price of a glass bottle. Companies love the packets for that. Also, transporting tetra packs is much easier and there is hardly any loss, unlike in the case of glass bottles that are more fragile. Another issue is that of adulteration and a tetra pack helps prevent that. Almost half of the hard liquor in Karnataka is now sold in these containers.
