Kevin O’Leary, an entrepreneur, author, politician and television personality, is perhaps best-known for his role as a no-nonsense, occasionally vicious, “shark” on ABC’s Shark Tank— and for his nickname: “Mr. Wonderful.” He serves as chairman of O’Leary Financial Group, a collection of services and companies that includes O’Leary Ventures, his Shark Tank deals and a growing roster of other businesses.
O’Leary, a native of Canada, is a passionate wine lover, and after experimenting in different aspects of the industry, he’s launched Shop Mr. Wonderful: a partnership with Vintage Wine Estates. Shop Mr. Wonderful features wines curated by O’Leary himself—55 selections and counting—from the Vintage Wine Estates portfolio.
Since its founding 20 years ago, Vintage Wine Estates has become a top 15 U.S. wine producer, selling more than 2 million cases of wines from California, Washington and Oregon annually.
Below is an excerpt from senior editor MaryAnn Worobiec’s recent conversation with O’Leary.
Kevin O’Leary: [Arrives to the video meeting wearing a beret and a tastevin.] I’ve decided we should have some fun with this. I put on a little accoutrement here.
Wine Spectator: We’ve seen you wear those accessories before. Tell us about them. Are you getting into character?

Lazy Bear bills itself as a modern American dinner party. But it’s so much more. This Mission District restaurant effortlessly strips away the formality of a multicourse dinner and replaces it with conviviality, nostalgia and curiosity. With reverence for time and place, Lazy Bear is an ode to California where guests dine in concert with the season and can explore diverse wines, including an impressive collection of older California vintages.
