Clearing beds is a quintessential autumn job and gives you the chance to plan ahead

Weeds are still growing, so don't let them linger

1 Rake up leaves and collect them for leaf mould. If left, they keep sun off the grass causing it to yellow and can become hosts for pests and disease.

2 Get rid of dead and dying summer bedding, then weed, turn and feed the soil and plant spring bedding and bulbs or let the bed lie fallow for winter.
