CAMINO DE SANTIAGO

FRANCE AND SPAIN

THE MACK DADDY of walking pilgrimages has existed since the ninth century, and has soared in popularity since the Council of Europe declared it as its first Cultural Route in 1987. The most traveled path, known as the French Way, kicks off in southern France and meanders 484 miles over the Pyrenees and expanses of breathtaking (sometimes literally) countryside to arrive at the presumed burial site of the biblical apostle James at the Santiago de Compostela cathedral in northern Spain. Pilgrims, who often identify themselves by wearing scallop shells, are eligible for discounted lodging and meals during their month-long treks. In their footsteps: In medieval times, the Catholic church forgave sins for completing the Camino de Santiago.

THE JORDAN TRAIL

JORDAN

EVEN THOUGH the region's history and sites are ancient, the dust has barely settled on this 400-mile trail traversing the kingdom of Jordan from north to south, blazed in 2017 by the tourism-eager government. Trekking the arid, hilly terrain for up to 40 days can be thirsty, hammy-humbling work, but rewards include encountering olive groves, hot springs and the famous sandstone ruins of Petra like few other visitors.
