Similar pots in a line on a low wall (above) were planted with lemon verbena and pansies. While Christo keeps the same trees and shrubs in the pots, he changes the filler plants each year for a different look and colour scheme.
With 112 pots and 22 hanging baskets on his property, Christo Calitz is adept at gardening with containers. “I didn’t realise that I had so many pots and hanging baskets until I started counting them,” says the retired businessman with a smile.
“A potted garden has so many benefits. It affords you so much more planting space and you can move the pots around to create a totally different look as the fancy takes you. And it’s an easy way to bring colour into your garden. Pots planted up with tall shrubs quickly add height and by replacing annuals and filler plants often, you can enjoy a different look in each season.”
