The city of Liverpool makes for a great weekend break with easy access across the Irish Sea. A city steeped in history, you will not be short of things to see and do!
The last ten years has seen Liverpool rediscover its swagger and seen many of its industrial sites transformed into trendy apartments, bars and art gallerys. With a proud history as a commercial and trading centre, today the city is one of the best places in the UK to shop, eat and enjoy a night out.
It is hard to go too far in Liverpool without coming across some reference to the Beatles, and it would be remiss to visit the city and not indulge in a spot of Beatlemania, whether its visiting the Cavern Club where it all started or taking a Magical Mystery Tour throughout the city and seeing some of the sites that played a part in the Beatles story from the band members family homes to Strawberry Fields.
Tate Liverpool is located in the Albert Dock and boasts a world class collection of modern art from many of the world’s most famous artists. With recent exhibitions featuring Turner, Lichtenstein and Warhol it is a must visit to satisfy your cultural needs.
The city’s maritime history is celebrated throughout the city, but it is not scared to confront parts of that history that they aren’t proud of, with the International Slavery Museum the centrepiece of this effort to confront this part of the nations history. With thought provoking exhibitions offering an insight into conditions aboard slave ships, the museum is an important addition to the city’s cultural landscape.
