Design and functionality go hand in hand in this newly reimagined federation home in Sydney’s north
THE KITCHEN
You’ve heard it before: the kitchen is the control centre of the home, and this is particularly the case in an open-plan layout. The kitchen is where families and guests naturally gather, so it’s important that it’s functional while also being suited to your lifestyle. “Every drawer and cupboard should to be designed with your needs in mind,” Caroline says.
Why it works A large island bench featuring a granite benchtop by WDK Stone and V-groove panelling anchors the kitchen zone and provides the perfect spot for a casual breakfast or to perch while dinner is being cooked. “The movement in the stone creates interest and works with the simple and classic finishes in the joinery,” Caroline says. To ensure a seamless look, the fridge is concealed behind cupboard doors, while a butler’s pantry (to the left of the ovens) keeps dirty dishes and bulky appliances out of sight. The monochrome scheme and large windows, which open to a courtyard and pool area, add to the room’s bright and spacious feel. Oak flooring was chosen for visual warmth.
