Function should always be the first consideration when it comes to choosing lighting options for every room in the home, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a little fun with it. Wall lights, table lamps and floor lamps can be statement-making décor too.

STAYING ON-TREND

At the moment, lighting design is taking its cues from the world of furniture, says Casarredo’s Darren Postan. “Lighting should not be thought of as purely functional. Even though lighting can make or break the atmosphere in a room, it has also become a major design element within the home and right now the trend is for big, brave, bold pieces.”

Postan adds, “We’re also seeing a rise in the ‘new classic’ trend, whereby a classic lamp style has been completely transformed through the use of modern materials and interesting lines to create something similar, with a more modern twist.”

The team at Euro Nouveau agrees. “Cone-shaped shades with an Eighties edge about them are very on-trend. The retro mushroom lamp is also popular at the moment. These short sculptural lamps with a squatty disposition are a great way of adding some Mid-Century flair to a contemporary space.”

The team at SHF Home recommends embracing the current trend for natural materials when looking to add some much-needed texture and interest to your living area. “Natural elements like wicker shades or terracotta bases are a lovely way to bring elements of the outdoors inside. To accentuate with a touch of modernity, geometric shapes are an especially trendy choice.”
