Do you want to disguise an ugly wall, screen a busy road or a neighbour’s house, or just need a little more privacy? Here are some solutions
BAMBOO
Bamboo makes a quick-growing screen especially if you use one of the taller, spreading forms. Not only do their striking canes add an architectural element, many of them come in colours like black, green, yellow and even striped. Growing up to 10m high, they can block out most things. Once established, they’re fast growing, but keep in mind that it takes a season or two for them to settle. Although fairly shallow, the rhizomes spread quickly, so circle the planting area with a 400mm deep barrier of plastic root guard, to keep their roots contained so they don’t damage walls or lift paving.
CLIMBERS
Climbers and creepers are ideal if you want to hide or soften a boundary wall and blend it into the garden. There’s a bewildering array to choose from, so consider how fast they grow, whether they’re evergreen for year-round cover and if they need support.
