Award-winning artist Denise Jaques loves experimenting with a mix of materials that lead her to create beautiful and totally unique mosaics for home and garden. Janet Donin caught the magic in her Farnham studio
Tell us a bit about yourself…
I am a mixed media artist and love to experiment using various materials. I trained in textile design at Central Saint Martins where I developed a thirst for dabbling in mixing media, utilising intense colour and applying my ideas to work into my textiles.
Before moving to Farnham 10 years ago, I had a studio by the sea in Essex, where I also developed a desire to create abstract mixed media art based on places I have loved and lived. What fascinates you about mosaics?
It’s all about colour, texture, distorted reflections and reflecting light. I love adding little surprises, unexpected accent colours and textures into my work. Capturing the ever-changing light on the landscape and the effect of seasonal changes is endlessly fascinating.
Where do you find your inspiration?
The garden pieces are inspired by my love of colour and desire to add drama to a garden. I use lots of mirror and reflective materials to maximise the distortion of light and reflections. The fine art mosaics are based on vibrant, abstract landscapes and seascapes. I use a mix of glass and traditional mosaic pieces, exploring the scale of large open spaces.
