We have all spent the past few weeks in various forms of lockdown. Some people are key workers and venture out to work in hazardous conditions, knowing they are making a real difference.
Others have managed to work from home, spending time communicating with the outside world online or on the phone. Some venture out only for hurried shopping trips to the supermarkets. Other have to shield themselves away from the outside world due to health issues and have relied on deliveries and the kindness of others to provide them with their groceries.
The boating community is no different and is experiencing the difficulties that lockdown brings. Despite all the great ways to keep in touch online, we have all experienced a sense of isolation. It struck me the other day when my mum and I were struggling with heavy shopping bags and someone tentatively asked if they could help us. We thanked them but had to say no as we knew it would break the social distancing rules. It was a sad moment and was a small indication of how our lives will be changed for a long time to come.
As liveaboard boaters, we have unique issues to deal with. Our water tank needs refilling and our toilet emptied. We sometimes need to travel to deal with our rubbish or to get gas or fuel. This means that we often have to venture out to complete these tasks. Leisure boaters are missing seeing their boats and getting on with the endless list of jobs most boaters have. Some marinas and fuel boats have stayed open, providing us with much need essential supplies. Hire boat companies are closed and people are wondering when they will be able to rebook their canceled holidays. It is a difficult time for all of us in the boating community.
