The harsh summer sun can be quite unforgiving to pets, especially when coupled with the high humidity levels that is typical of Mumbai summer.
From heat strokes to tick infestations to skin irritation, your pet is susceptible to a few afflictions, most of which are easily preventable with timely measures. Pet parents and veterinary experts from across the city list their proven strategies to help their pets to beat the heat.
Dogs
Heat stroke is a common concern for dogs, especially short-nosed or brachycephalic breeds, such as pugs, boxers and bull dogs, explains vet Natasha Couto. The shape of their faces makes it harder for these breeds to pant and hence dissipate body heat. Help your dog to stay cool by:
• Time their walks well:
Chembur-based blogger Mitali Jakatdar ensures that her dogs are walked well before 10.30 am and after 5 pm. “A good way to check whether the ground is cool enough for your dog to walk on, is to touch it with the palm of your hand. If it’s too hot for you, it’s also too hot for them,” she says.
• Carry cold packs:
If you plan to travel with your dog during the day, Couto advises that you also carry ice packs you can apply to your dog or cold water to sponge him/her. “Many dogs (especially short-nosed variants) will begin grunting when they are unable to cope with the heat and eventually collapse,” she says. In case of overheating, make sure to move your pet immediately to a shaded spot, preferably in front of a fan, and wrap them in towels soaked in room-temperature water. Also call your vet for further advice.
