We analyze Modi’s maiden visit and the impact it can have in the 2018 assembly elections in the State
BJP’s victory in Assam holds immense significance for the sister states of the Northeast, including its immediate neigbour Meghalaya
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Meghalaya, BJP’s victory in Assam and formation of North East Development Alliance (NEDA) are all indication that BJP is slowly and steadily making inroads intothe region.
Ripple Effects
BJP’s victory in Assam holds immense significance for the sister states of the Northeast, including its immediate neigbour Meghalaya, which goes to polls in 2018. In the just concluded by election for the Tura Lok Sabha seat, the BJP had supported the candidature of National People’s Party (NPP) president Conrad K Sangma, who won the election with a whooping 1.93 lakh votes defeating Congress candidate Dikkanchi D Shira, wife of Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.
After Assam, the BJP is now eyeing Meghalaya, a State which has no BJP legislator in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, in a big way. This is evident with its national spokesperson Nalin Kohli being made in-charge of the State, who now frequents different parts of the region. Former Congress leader Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is a strategist for the BJP and is heading the recently formed North East Development Alliance (NEDA) shares close relations with many top leaders of the Congress in the State. There is a buzz that Sarma may break the ice by bringing together Congress leaders into BJP’s fold.

MUSINGS OF A SOLDIER: TIT-BITS
People often ask me about my life out of uniform. Honestly, I have had no problems. Not so far. Instead, I find it quite refreshing. No routine, no parades, no briefing, no impending operations. Having donned the uniform since the age of thirteen until I hung up my boots last year, could I ever visualize life out of uniform? Not really. But, as I said, the transition has been quite smooth–no hang-overs, no regrets. People have been very positive in their interactions. Government departments have been responsive whenever I have approached for assistance. The genuine respect for the uniform is quite evident and it makes my heart swell with pride. Arunachal, to that extent, is the most nationalistic state in the country, I daresay. It has been kind of a revelation for me to experience the freedom of being a common man in an environment of positivity!
