The great 20th century geneticist T.G. Dobzhansky once wrote an essay titled “Nothing in Biology Makes Sense Except in the Light of Evolution.”1 Without a doubt, the prescient Dr. Dobzhansky was absolutely correct as the concept of evolution by natural selection has tremendously enhanced the field of biology while facilitating some of the most important discoveries in biomedicine. Not surprisingly, the far-reaching impact of evolutionary theory doesn’t end there. It also imparts a deeper insight into many divergent aspects of life including the process of muscular growth where, like many revelations uncovered from evolutionary insight, the novel viewpoint gained from looking at muscle growth through the lens of evolution also elucidates unexpected observations. Interestingly, this unexpected insight supports the use of a nutritional protocol once thought to only accelerate weight loss. Yet, evolutionary theory suggests this nutritional strategy also promotes considerable gains in muscularity.

THE EVOLUTION OF MUSCLE GROWTH

While I’m sure you’re wondering what the aforementioned nutritional plan is, let me first explain how the evolutionary analysis of muscle growth supports the use of this nutritional strategy for gaining muscle size. Early humans, living around 100,000 years ago, expended a lot of energy hunting for food. The complexities associated with capturing their food normally led to periods of low food supply. The limited amount of food combined with the high-energy costs from hunting put evolutionary pressure on the genomes of early humans that placed a premium on energy. Because hunting was an effective way to obtain food as an energy source, the muscular system was preferentially supplied energy over many other energy-consuming processes within the body. This continual energy supply to muscle would maintain function of the muscular system and therefore the ability to hunt.

It seems like a decade has passed since the pandemic began in 2020. That was a chaotic year for all of us. MD sent me to Atlanta to cover the Chicago Pro, because restrictions in Illinois made it impossible to hold Tim Gardner's annual extravaganza there. The athletes still showed up in force to compete, and the Classic Physique division alone featured 30 men. When they came out to be adjudicated, one man stood out in a flash as the one to beat. I had never heard of Bryan Jones until that point aside from a vague recollection that he'd won the USA a couple of years before. With his braided and colored hair piled on top of his head in a gathered bun with the ends appearing to be some type of bizarre plant, I dubbed him \"The Kai Greene of Classic.\" That didn't stick, thankfully, because Bryan \"Lord\" Jones is a unique athlete in his own right. I knew I was looking at a man who was going to make waves in that division. A few months later he did just that, placing fifth in his first Olympia appearance. But we only saw him twice more after that, at the Arnold Classic and once again at the Olympia at the end of 2021. Since then, Jones has been working hard to build the additional size needed to successfully transition to the Open category. I spoke with him about his brief but notable time in Classic, and how he plans to make a big splash in Open.
