In Philippine mythology, Bathala is the creator of the universe. But the name has gained another meaning for the Dumagat tribe living in the uplands of Norzagaray, Bulacan; for them, Bathala is also an innovation that has made life easier. A project of four engineering students of Mapúa University (Jeremy De Leon, Gabrielle Leyson, Norman Quiniquini, Alsus Adiaton, and their adviser Engr. Febus Reidj Cruz), Bathala is an all-in-one stove that converts heat energy to electricity. The project earned the team a P1 million research grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to further develop their ideas. We talk to the young inventors about how they brought light to the community.
