What happened to them after visiting the Baby Jesus? My Pope investigates.
According to the Gospel of Matthew, they were astronomers, or at least experts of stars, who came from the East and brought gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the newborn Jesus. They are celebrated every January 6, on the feast of the Epiphany, when we remember their visit to Bethlehem. But besides this, we do not know much about the Three Kings. In fact, Matthew does not even confirm that there were three of them—it was just a number later chosen by the Christian tradition for the three gifts. It’s not even a proven fact that they were called Melchior, Balthasar, and Gaspar. We only know that, led by a glowing star, they came from the East to worship the Baby Jesus. And it is from this moment on that the Three Kings—the Magi— disappear from the Gospel.
