Is it possible to sample Fugu cuisine in Singapore? The answer is yes – with the opening of Guenpin Fugu and Snow Crab Japanese Restaurant at Maxwell Chambers, you now can.

Guenpin is the top torafugu restaurant chain in Japan with 96 outlets around the country, said Kazuyuki Kobayashi, manager of Guenpin, and the restaurant in Singapore is their first overseas outlet. “We want to expand to a total of 80 restaurants in nine other Asian countries within the next five years,” he added.

Torafugu is a delicacy: it is the highest-grade fugu available, and Guenpin serves it in a variety of styles. Not only that, Guenpin takes a lot of care to ensure that the freshness of its fish is unparalleled.

“Guenpin has an international patent for our ageing process – we store our fugu at minus 60 degrees Celsius to preserve the freshness and quality. Other restaurants typically store their fishes at 16 degrees Celsius. Guenpin has also specially imported a defrost machine from Japan to thaw the frozen fugu, ensuring that the robust flavour and succulent texture are maintained,” explained Kobayashi.
