Toasting the Terno
The sophomore year of TernoCon once more brought out the best in Filipino designers exhibiting their contemporary take on the classic Philippine national dress. Organised by Cultural Centre of the Philippines and homegrown clothing brand Bench, the biennial contest cum fashion show was held at CCP’S Nicanor Abelardo Theatre.
This year, a spectacle of Filipino artistry was unveiled. The venue was decked with modern versions of the terno and enlivened by performances of music groups such as Sinala Manunubili, Musika Filipina, Obusan Folkoric Group, and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra led by Herminigildo Ranera. Adding to the visual feast are an exhibit of miniature versions of the terno by doll couturier Cholo Ayuyao, portraits of Filipinas by Rafael de Casal, and several vintage terno designed by Salvacion Lim Higgins.
The project brings together designers from all over the country to educate them and start a dialogue about the endless possibilities of the national dress. With artistic licence, designers who joined the contest eschewed the formal silhouette of the terno and utilised contrasting textures, fabric manipulations, and reimagined butterfly sleeves without compromising wearability.
Hannah Adrias of Pasay City took an unconventional approach with utilitarian and military-inspired fashion— using silk, wool, leather, and bag straps—and bagged the top award. Jaggy Glarino of General Santos City took home the silver and Dinnes Obusan from Camarines Sur won the bronze.
