Bruichladdich, Annabel Tan discovers, does more than just whisky; the distiller is also committed to the island it’s on and efforts towards a more sustainable future
Off the west coast of Scotland, among the sprawling, rugged landscapes of the Hebridean archipelago, is a remote island known for its whisky. The Isle of Islay is home to several well-known distilleries, including Bruichladdich, which produces mainly single malt Scotch whiskies as well as an artisanal gin.
Bruichladdich prides itself on being Islay-based and keeps most of its production process on the island. Currently, its whisky is conceived, distilled, matured and bottled on Islay, using 100 percent Scottish barley. The only step missing here – also the first step of the process – is malting the barley, which the distiller does in Inverness, a city in the Scottish Highlands.
