A general dictionary defines music as, 'Any sweet, pleasing, or harmonious sounds or sound, an art of sound that expresses ideas and emotions through rhythm, melody and harmony. From centuries music has been an excellent, but neglected method of stress management. Music has the power to rapidly change people's emotions and is probably the greatest invention after the wheel. A powerful song that hardly lasts four minutes can dramatically alter a person's emotions, fatigue and fears. It can make a sad person happy, or a happy person sad. Music has been used from centuries to heal, create fear, communicate, inspire, celebrate, and to entertain. The power of music has been acknowledged and used very successfully throughout history.
From ancient Egyptian times to the present day music has been an important part of every civilization and culture. Many ancient war tribes in Africa still use war drums to celebrate or create fear and panic in villages they plan to attack. The popularity and success of almost all Indian films has been due to its music.
Probably everyone would have heard the saying that music can 'soothe the savage beast.' Music has a magical effect on all humans, animals and even plants. Doctors have proved that music can calm patients suffering from pain and discomfort. People who listen to music regularly are usually calmer than people who don't. Listening to music can do wonders to reduce your stress in and outside the workplace.
