Thanks to the hit period drama Poldark, which returns with its third series this year, the spotlight has been put on Cornwall, the ancient Celtic kingdom known as Kernow by locals, once again

Although Aidan Turner takes the title role in TV’s adaptation of Poldark, it’s the breathtaking backdrop to the story of smugglers, shipwrecks and mining that is the real star of the show. Here, we take a look at some of the best spots to stay in this stunning south-west county to bring you closer to the white sandy beaches, rugged cliffs and turquoise waters for which the region is famous.

Set in a mature Cornish garden, Grade II listed Trerose Manor, near Falmouth, is a sweet B&B with three elegant and spacious en-suite guest rooms, featuring antique furniture and rare prints. Trerose, which is Cornish for ‘house on the headland’, is situated at the head of the Helford River – a river utilised by smugglers during the 18th and 19th centuries – and previous colourful owners of the manor house include the Killigrews: notorious 16th-century pirates.

After a restful night, guests can enjoy a traditional English breakfast with locally sourced sausages and bacon served in the warm and inviting kitchen or, on sunny days, outside on the terrace overlooking the garden. The manor is well located for coastal walks, as well as gardens, (such as Trelissick, Bonython and Heligan), historic houses, and tin mines.

Poldark tells the story of a returned British army officer who attempts to turn his misfortunes around by opening a derelict mine, and at Grade I listed Godolphin House in the village of Godolphin Cross, you can learn about Cornwall’s mining heritage.

Managed by National Trust Holidays, this unique 16th-century granite-stone house offers guests an authentic historic stay, with period features such as the exquisite linen-fold panelling and carved beams of the dining room.
