Tammy Fry Kelly, 36, Marketing Director Of The Fry Family Food Co, And Founder Of Tough Love, Is Passionate About Living A Vegetarian Lifestyle With Her Husband Richard, And Their Two Children, Josh, 8, And Kai, 5.
‘I was born in Cato Ridge, KwaZulu-Natal, into really humble beginnings. My dad, Wally, was a goat farmer, and my mom, Debbie, taught at the local village school. I think the beginning of my understanding about food and where it came from was seeing the goats being sent off to slaughter. I was born a vegetarian, and had a deep love for animals, as all children do, and I just couldn’t accept that some animals were pets and others were food. Later, my dad joined my mom and I, and adopted a vegetarian lifestyle, becoming passionate about making a difference in the world.
‘Our dinner conversations started out with school day report-backs and moved on to discussions about morality, ethics, the state of the world, and an update on the latest plant-based burger recipe they managed to crack that day. Dad decided to work on developing a range of high protein meat replacements, an unknown concept 25 years ago! It started out as an experiment just for our family and a few friends, but when the queue of friends lining up at the gate for our products grew longer, and our cooking pot could no longer fit enough sausages to fill the demand, my folks decided it was time to launch Fry’s – the company.
