Surprisingly better than most other vegetables, the bitter gourd is the reigning king of the kitchen
The bitter gourd is believed to have been brought from Africa to Brazil by slaves, dispersed by birds within continents and then domesticated in eastern India and southern China. Its grooved edges, which make it look as if it has been chewed, have given it an apt scientific name – momordica charantia that comes from the Latin word momordica, which means ‘to bite’. It’s obvious that the bitter gourd belongs to the gourd family, and it does, in fact, resemble an elongated light green cucumber covered in a warty rind. Despite its rather unflattering appearance and bitter flavour, it is undisputedly one of the most nutritious vegetables.
