It is easy to assume that, before the Modern Age, human beings were barbaric and dirty and went on for days and even months without taking a shower. But historical texts and evidence reveal that bathing rituals were an integral part of several ancient cultures and have evolved over centuries. From the ancient Greeks, who first developed showers, to the Romans, who started the concept of public bathhouses, bathing has been much more elaborate and important than you can imagine. Public bathhouses, the precursor of the modern day spa, is where you could get massage while meeting people. And the hammam (‘public bath’ in Arabic) is a variation of the traditional steam bath, which is often coupled with a body treatment, such as a massage, scrub or wrap.
