Commonest mistake in your 30s

NOT SAVING ENOUGH

Many women in their 30s aren’t saving enough, or at all, because they feel they have enough time to catch up later in life. “This mentality often leads to reckless spending that can rack up debt,” warns Kalay Pillay. “About 48% of the 12 million credit-active South Africans are now in debt,” adds Winnie Kunene.

“Ideally, once you’ve got a handle on debt, you should put 15 to 20% of your gross income into savings in your 30s,” advises Sue McLennan.

NO STRATEGY TO CLEAR YOUR BOND

Many homebuyers will find themselves in the unfortunate position of still having to pay home-loan instalments when they’re close to or at retirement, because they only qualified for a home loan in their 40s, or because they weren’t paying enough into their bond every month.
