It's Go Time For Gruden

Training camp isn’t just for players. It seems the boss needs some brush-up work, too.

Coach Jay Gruden is calling the Washington Redskins offense this season after a two-year hiatus. With offensive coordinator Sean McVay now coaching the Los Angeles Rams, Gruden opted to return to play calling. Oh, he’ll still develop the game plan with assistants, but come Sundays the plays go from Gruden’s lips to quarterback Kirk Cousins’ ear.

And just like Cousins needs some snaps, so does Gruden. Training camp sessions will include periods where Gruden freely calls plays trying to get a feel for game situations.

“I think early on we’re going to have scripted practices,” he said, “and once we get going, get our main core of plays in there, I think we’ll have a lot of unscripted practices where I can call plays. So, I think that’s the most important thing, the unscripted practice. Whether it’s two-minute, whether it’s drives down the field, whether it’s third downs, all that good stuff, do a lot of unscripted work, red zone and go from there, but I feel pretty comfortable already.”
