As a collector of toy/model soldiers for over fifty years my wife indulges my other passion (not only her!) by allowing me to occupy the largest room in the house, that we now refer to as the &lsquo;Soldier Room&rsquo;, where in over twenty cabinets, I display my collection.However with all this collecting it is very easy to cram the figures on to the shelves and as a consequence not only can you not see what is in the back three rows of a shelf (one metre wide and 300mm deep) but anything on the bottom two shelves and the very top one come to that - cannot be seen either. Each cabinet is about 1.9m high and has ten shelves.<img src="https://magarticles.magzter.com/articles/5396/487226/5f202531df137/1595941834859.jpg"" owidth=534 oheight=374" style="width: 534px; height: 374px;" />So, in an ideal world where space is not problem I would like and sometimes do, make an effort to make a small display of a set or a collection of figures into a &lsquo;whole scene&rsquo;. This really gives the figures the chance to &lsquo;shine out&rsquo; on their own.It can be as simple as putting a printed paper background onto the back of the display cabinet. (I think this magazine sold various backdrops some years ago depicting bombarded villages/towns, hillsides and forests). Model railway accessory suppliers offer a variety as well.<img src="https://magarticles.magzter.com/articles/5396/487226/5f202531df137/1595941837536.jpg"" owidth=534 oheight=376" style="width: 534px; height: 376px;" />I have been a member of the British Model Soldier Society for some years and often put entries into their National Competition and their inter branch competition. So many figures get &lsquo;contained&rsquo; into a simple diorama to capture the essence of the figure or figures and makes it into a presentation.I produce a small threesided box on a base, usually from MDF, a basic paint colour then cover the walls appropriately, using, printed sheets from dolls house or model railway accessory suppliers.<div style="page-break-before:always; page-break-after:always"><img src="https://magarticles.magzter.com/articles/5396/487226/5f202531df137/1595941939336.jpg"" owidth=812 oheight=316" style="width: 812px; height: 316px;" />Another good source for backgrounds is travel brochures, old calendars and various magazines,I sometimes need windows and doors, so I draw these up, then photocopy them.Occasionally these dioramas appear on eBay (as in the box used for &lsquo;Egypt of the Pharaohs&rsquo;).The Internet i.e. Google, is a good source for inspiration as to what would be suitable background for a group of figures.I am also in the habit of keeping an eye out for miniature items to help &lsquo;dress&rsquo; a scene and find many useful items amongst flat figures - flower vases, clocks, trees etc. The only limit you have is your imagination.
