Reality Bites

It doesn’t matter how rose-tinted your spectacles are, the world can still be ugly, and life is still often pretty fucking hard.

Sometimes the truth is hard to swallow, but sometimes it just needs to be presented in black and white. Especially when it comes to art, it’s easy for the struggles that we face to be romanticised to a point where they are almost unrecognisable, and the people producing them held up on a pedestal for all to see.

For SeeYouSpaceCowboy’s Connie Sgarbossa, it’s this way of presenting the darker side of the everyday that has caused her the most frustration, especially as someone that people now look to. Because she knows first-hand from her own experiences that it’s not beautiful, and it shouldn’t be presented that way.

“I have always rejected the idea of idols. It was instilled into me from a young age by my dad that we don’t look up to people. We create ourselves. I’m just a person doing my own thing, but I’ve been pushed into this position where people come to me looking for advice or [saying] that I saved their life. I just wish that I could save my own. Other people may view me as this mental health crusader, but it’s such a small part of me. I’m not always fighting for trans rights. I’m struggling to stay alive.

“I’m not some Greek goddess. I’m not a heroine in a fable. I’m a person that crumbles just as much as everyone else does. I’m vulnerable, I’m weak. I’m everything that you are, and that’s just the way it is.”
