Control panels were being tampered by implanting remote-controlled chip in the automated fuel dispensing units to cheat the consumers for delivering less for the money,
A mid national de-bate over vulnerability of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) by tampering and manipulating its functioning and questions are raised about reliability of mandate achieved through such a mechanised process, UP STF has bust nationwide racket in automated fuel dispensing units of various Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). STF teams demonstrated how tampering of control panels was done by implanting remote controlled chip in the automated fuel dispensing units to cheat the consumers for earning huge gains. Consumers were getting 50-100 ml less petrol/ diesel per litre.
The way this organised crime of deceiving consumers was going on with impunity naturally raised questions on the mechanism with regard to integrity of vigilance and inspection management of OMCs and Weight and Measure Department that entrusted its officials to go for a periodical inspection of these fuel pumps to protect consumer’s interests.
An inter-state racket has been unearthed by Special Task Force of UP Police after raiding 19 petrol pumps and found 18 pumps using a chip-based remote operated electronic device when activated, dispenses 50-100 ml. less fuel per litre. Four pump owners and 18 other staff deployed there were arrested in raids. On the tip of accused technician Rajendra, police has subsequently nabbed one Ajay Chaurasia alias Raju who allegedly confessed his involvement in supplying and implanting of such devices for the last 10 years.
The device was implanted inside the sealed area of the machine, suggestive of large scale connivance among sales officers and service engineers of Oil Marketing Companies (OMC), weight and measures officials and petrol pump owners to cheat people for earning enormous profit of crores of rupees illegally.
