What was the intent behind initiating the ‘Green Therapy’ concept? How will this drive help?
The aim behind initiating the ‘Green Therapy’ concept was to bring academicians, practicing vaidyas, local experts, and community under one platform to discuss issues related to ethnobotany and biodiversity. Deliberations like these help us in preserving traditions, apart from enhancing our knowledge on ethnobotany and biodiversity. This also helps academicians and local experts to understand each other’s perspective. The medicinal values of plants which are known to academicians, helps local experts and vaidyas, whereas medicinal values of plants known to local experts, becomes a topic which academicians can investigate into and research on. This, along with the flora, helps in enriching the botanical garden of our mines and is our contribution towards the National Biodiversity Target.
How have steps, such as establishing a butterfly park at Sukinda and Joda and niche nesting (artificial bird nesting boxes) in Noamundi helped?
A comprehensive assessment of biodiversity was carried out by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) team at each site and based on this, the Biodiversity Management Plan (BMP) was formulated. The overall focus of BMP is biodiversity conservation and enhancement in and around mining sites. Steps such as a butterfly-park, niche nesting for biodiversity enhancement of the area has helped us in several ways as well.
