“WE never do it easy, do we?” laughed John Simpson as he was again the hero in a remarkable win for champions Middlesex, who have now lost just two of their last 35 four-day games.
Last year’s wins at Scarborough, Taunton, Trent Bridge and in the most famous of the lot, against Yorkshire at Lord’s, will live long in the memory, and they have kicked off their defence in a similarly stunning vein, with a one-wicket win over MCC.
“We don’t do boring,” said Simpson. “It was another exciting finish but it’s nice to get a win over the MCC.
“Starting the day we wondered if we could sneak a win or if they would knock us over again but it was very exciting to get it over the line.
“It felt deja vu from last year as we lost one or two wickets. It was all a bit blurry!”
They do not do things simply, as Simpson said. Middlesex had been behind the game from the get-go.
