STARS paid tribute today to the “mesmerising, brilliant” Shane Warne at an emotional memorial service at Melbourne’s Test cricket ground.
More than 50,000 people filled the MCG stadium to say goodbye to the “larrikin” Australian leg spinner who died earlier this month in Thailand of a suspected heart attack aged just 52.
Sir Elton John, a close friend of Warne’s former fiancee Liz Hurley, led the appreciations of his life with a video performance of his song Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me which he dedicated to the bowler’s children Brooke, Summer and Jackson.
He described Warne as “one of the greatest sportsmen ever and certainly one of the most amazing Australian cricketers of all time” who will “live on through future generations because he was mesmerising, he was brilliant and he loved to play cricket and he loved life.”
